“Eugenics at the Movies:A series of films exploring the history of degeneracy, disability, and disease”
Join us for this free series and discussion of how eugenics constructed medical narratives of disability and social 'worth' in popular film in the UK, US, and Germany. These three historic movies explore how eugenicists understood Mendelian genetics and the inheritance of talent or defect and how, applied to society, it informed medical and ethical debates surrounding euthanasia and assisted suicide, as well as approaches to welfare and worth. Fundamentally, how did eugenic ideas translate into public engagement through film and how do they continue to affect our current views on public health, social care, disability and disease?
