John Henry Brookes can be seen as the spiritual founder of Oxford Brookes University.

John Henry Brookes became Vice-Principal of the Oxford City Technical School and Head of the School of Art in 1928 and over the next 30 years he exerted a powerful influence on the development of the institution. He was committed, throughout his life, to the goal of making education available to all.

On the 29 April 2009, Bryan Brown gave a lecture on John Henry Brookes. The talk traced Brookes’ life as an artist and craftsman, teacher and an outstanding educationalist and reflected on his educational philosophies and how they translate into the life and work of Oxford Brookes today.
