In his long career David Buckle's contribution to the county of Oxfordshire took many forms. For over 30 years he was a well-known magistrate on the Abingdon Bench, which he chaired for a three-year period. He also served for many years as Oxfordshire District Secretary of the Transport and General Workers' Union, as well as being the county councillor for Wood Farm ward, Oxford City, from 1989-2001, and Chair of the County Council from 1996-1998. He was a Member of the Arts Council of Great Britain, 1978 - 1982, Governor and Executive member of Ruskin College, 1969 - 1996 and Parliamentary Candidate in the 1955 & 1959 General Elections.
