John Walton was awarded a life peerage as Lord Walton of Detchant in 1989. Formerly a neurologist, and Dean of Medicine at the University of Durham, Lord Walton has served as President of the British Medical Association, the Royal Society of Medicine, the General Medical Council, and the World Federation of Neurology. His recent achievements include proposing a successful amendment in the House of Lords to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill.
