Mike Heron spent much of his early career in the food industry, where his roles included Chairman of Bachelors Foods Ltd (1976–1982). In 1993 he was appointed Chairman of The Post Office. In the same year he was appointed Chairman of the National Council for Vocational Qualifications (NCVQ), having been active in the education sector since the early 1990s. His further offices include Deputy Chairman of Business in the Community.
