Michael Wood OBE

Doctor of Science (HonDSc)

Year conferred: 1997

Michael Wood

Although primarily an academic, Michael Wood has been described as a cartographer in the broadest sense. His long university career, which drew to a close in 2009, included teaching all aspects of Mapping Science, both in the UK and overseas, and researching topics such as the design of tourist maps, knowledge and expertise in map use, the use of interactive terrain representations in mountain wayfinding, and the nature and development of cartography. Friendship with some of the world's leading artistic exponents of cartographic relief representation and mountain panoramas led him to develop similar graphic skills which he has employed in many national and international projects through the years, especially atlas work. His interest in the development of the wider field and profession of cartography led to various appointments, including President of the British Cartographic Society (1980s), the International Cartographic Association (1990s) and the Society of Cartographers (1991-2008), and also various awards and recognitions, especially an OBE for 'services to Cartography'.

Now retired, he continues to apply his enthusiasm for maps, in external examining, developing his graphic skills and investigating the nature of maps and mapping.
