Professor Monica Charlot

Monica Charlot came to Oxford in 1984 to work for the Oxford-based cultural centre Maison Française. In her role as Director she brought new life to the centre and initiated its links with Oxford Brookes University.

She founded the Oxford Branch of the Association for the Study of Modern and Contemporary France with the French Department at Oxford Brookes. A well known writer and broadcaster, who was later appointed professor at the Sorbonne in Paris (Paris III), Monica has done much to help the French better understand British politics and society.

Amongst her work is a particularly well-reviewed biography of the Young Queen Victoria. Monica received an honorary doctorate in 1990.

Her daughter, Dr Irène Hill, is a Principal Lecturer in the School of Languages.

Monica died in 2005.
