Dr Peter Iredale

Peter Iredale, a physicist, carried out research at the Harwell Nuclear Laboratory and subsequently had a number of senior appointments including Director of Engineering and Director of Non Nuclear Energy (renewable energy). In the latter context he was also Chairman of the Department of Energy's Wave Energy Steering Committee. In 1987 he was appointed Director of the Harwell Laboratory, and in 1990 became Head of the Harwell and Culham sites of the Atomic Energy Authority.

Peter began a new career in 1992 as Chairman of Oxfordshire Health Authority. Under successive governments he oversaw major reorganisations of medical provision in Oxfordshire and initiated the project to rationalise Oxford's acute hospitals. He was also instrumental in the creation of Oxford's Institute of Health Sciences.
