Professor Dame Valerie Beral

Professor Dame Beral has received numerous honours for her research, including Companion of the Order of Australia, Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and Fellow of the Royal Society.

Her research focuses on the role of reproductive, hormonal and infectious agents in cancer. As Principal Investigator for the Million Women Study she led ground breaking research that has changed attitudes to hormone replacement therapy worldwide.

After training in medicine in Sydney, and establishing her research reputation at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, she came to Oxford in 1988, where she is now Professor of Epidemiology, Director of the Cancer Epidemiology Unit and Fellow of Green Templeton College.
