Brookes awarded Centre for Excellence in Teacher Training

Oxford Brookes University is one of 11 organisations to be chosen to lead a Centre for Excellence in Teacher Training (CETT).

The new centre will be called the Westminster CETT and has been awarded approximately £400,000 of government funding for its first year.

CETTs were officially launched by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Bill Rammell, on Thursday 25 October at a special reception in the House of Commons.

The CETTs are unique partnerships that work together to improve teaching and learning in Further Education by supporting teachers, trainers and tutors to update their skills and knowledge.

The Westminster Institute of Education at Oxford Brookes University and Westminster University are the lead partners in the Westminster CETT that includes18 key training providers across the south east.

Director of the Westminster CETT, Dr Liz Browne, of Oxford Brookes said: ‘The Centres for Excellence are an important part of the government’s reforms to teacher training in the learning and skills sector and we were delighted that our bid was successful.

‘CETTs have been developed as part of the national strategy to enhance the quality of teacher training and ensure there are continuing professional development opportunities for all teachers.

‘The focus of our work will be research, sharing good practice and expertise, promoting equality and diversity, and improving teacher training throughout the sector in further education, adult and community learning and work based learning.’
