Director of British Rowing and alumni Olympians to visit Brookes
He will be joined by Olympic gold medallists and Brookes alumni Steve Williams, Ben Hunt-Davies and Rowley Douglas for an evening of events.
The evening begins at 6pm on Wednesday April 28 and includes an Alumni Lecture by Ben in the university’s Main Lecture Theatre at Gipsy Lane and a talk by the Oxford Brookes University Boat Club (OBUBC) coach Richard Spratley showcasing the recent successes of the Brookes boat crews.
That will be followed by a fundraising dinner for the university’s new Centre for Rowing (shown in the artist's impression). OBUBC plans to raise £1 million for the new training base near Wallingford to help continue the squad’s success.
As one of the most powerful undergraduate rowing teams in the UK and a feeder squad for Team GB’s Olympic crews, the new Centre for Rowing will be fundamental to maintaining the UK’s dominance in the sport.
Having been granted planning permission for the new Centre for Rowing, this event will be crucial to the fundraising campaign.
It is hoped the new facilities along the River Thames will be constructed well before 2012 so the squad can get as much use out of them as possible before the London Olympics.
The night also marks the official launch of Centre for Rowing Wines and ‘Sponsor a Vine’ initiative. Both fundraising schemes have been created by David Levin, award-winning wine maker and visiting Professor of Oxford Brookes University.
