Edith Wharton: a life in books
Wednesday 22 October 2008, 18:00 to 19:30, Main Lecture Theatre
Janet Beer
In her first lecture for Brookes as Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janet Beer will talk about the life and works of American writer Edith Wharton (1862-1937).
Edith Wharton spent much of her life in ‘self imposed exile’ in Europe where she nourished an extraordinary book collection. Her books express not just her taste, but the issues of the age she lived in. Her appetite for life and knowledge of all kind, along with her literary friendships and influences, are reflected in her works and give us a fascinating insight into this remarkable woman.
Professor Janet Beer became Vice-Chancellor of Oxford Brookes in September 2007.
