The Future of Medical Professionalism
Wednesday 13 May 2009, 18:00 to 19:30, Lloyd Lecture Theatre
Niall Dickson
The compact between doctors, patients and the state that traditionally underpinned the working of the NHS is changing. Today's doctors face unprecedented challenges resulting from new expectations of patients, the government and NHS managers.
This lecture will argue that professionalism is not dead - but there are wider forces which have challenged traditional practice and the role of doctors in society. The profession must collectively develop a renewed compact to clarify doctors' roles, strengthen morale and re-engage them with frontline service developments.
