Origami with no hands: how genes influence growth and form

Wednesday 15 October 2008, 18:00 to 19:30, Lloyd Lecture Theatre

Professor Enrico Coen

Origami

Although we know that genes control the patterns formed by cell types during the development of an organism, we still need to understand more about the way genes modify the growth of these structures.

Professor Coen will talk about his investigations, which use computer modelling and genetics to look into the shapes of living organisms - at a microscopic level - and how genes influence them at various stages of development.

The results let us see patterns that would be the envy of an origami expert, but it is all done with no hands!

Professor Coen is Project Leader of Cell and Developmental Biology at the John Innes Centre, an international centre of excellence in plant science and microbiology.
