The privatisation of leading: wrestling education and social justice from 'bullet point' leadership
Wednesday 08 April 2009, 18:00 to 19:30, Lloyd Lecture Theatre
Professor Marlene Morrison
The topic of leadership has an enduring appeal, with numerous attempts made to characterise what makes some leaders and some leadership practices more effective than others. This applies equally to the leadership of educational organisations.
Despite developments in theory and practice, some organisations have been described as ‘despotisms’, struggling to retain equilibrium in the face of internal and external challenge.
Professor Morrison, using examples from her own research, will consider questions such as: what are the implications of leadership ‘fads’ upon increasingly prescribed educational purposes? What is the contribution of critical research in making re-connections with values of equity, social justice, and learning?
Professor Morrison is a sociologist of education who specialises in education leadership for diversity, social justice and inclusion. She is Professor of Education at the Westminster Institute of Education.
