Council rejects plans
Oxford City Councillors have rejected the proposed £132 million redevelopment of Oxford Brookes’ Headington Campus.
At a full meeting of the Council, they voted not to support the university's plans for new library and teaching spaces.
A library, social learning spaces, lecture theatres and computer suites together with the Students' Union and student support services were earmarked for the planned five-storey building.
Paul Large, Acting Registrar at Oxford Brookes University, said:
"This is an important planning application for the future of Oxford Brookes and we are disappointed the city council has rejected our plans at this time.
"These are comprehensive and considered proposals, the result of much dialogue, consultation and debate since 2005. We listened to residents’ concerns carefully and made changes to the original plans based on the feedback.
"We will now take away the feedback that has arisen from the council’s decision and consider our next course of action.
"Improvements to our teaching and learning space are of vital importance to the future of the university. Oxford Brookes is a major national and international institution and makes an enormous contribution to the city – it is very important that our facilities match our reputation as a leading university."
