University Court

The Oxford Brookes University Court was created in 1999 by Professor Graham Upton, the previous Vice-Chancellor (1997-2007), as a means of extending Oxford Brookes' links with external communities.

Along with all other post '92 universities the small size of Brookes' Governing Body limits the number of people who can become engaged with the governance of the university, although this is extended by the possibility of involving people in the Audit Committee. Involvement of external people in the university’s activities is also encouraged in Schools some of which have had advisory bodies on which such people sit.

The development of alumni activities over recent years has resulted in an increase in the number of alumni involved in the work of the university.

Purpose and remit

The purpose of the Court is to support the university in the development and achievement of its objectives.

The Court will be entirely non-executive, aimed at serving a broad range of functions and should be very flexible in its membership.

The Court will have no executive authority in the governance and conduct of the university.

Annual meeting

There will be an annual meeting, broken up into two distinct sections, one annual report from the VC, followed by an interactive section, concluding with a reception.
