Pro Vice-Chancellor/Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

Professor Derek Elsom

Professor Derek Elsom is Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Prior to the University’s restructure of eight academic Schools into four Faculties, Derek was Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Law (2003-2011) and Dean of the Westminster Institute of Education (2009-2011).

One of Derek’s responsibilities is to build the capacity of Brookes to engage more effectively with employers – private, public and third sector organisations – and to develop flexible programmes for enhancing the high level skills and continuing professional development of their employees.

HEFCE awarded the University £2.7m to enhance its workforce development and employer engagement capability and this programme has developed many short courses, Foundation Degrees and Postgraduate Certificates and Diplomas to meet employer and employee needs.

The infrastructure is now in place to continue to deliver many new programmes in the future. The stronger relationship with employers is also helping student employability through increased placement and work-based learning opportunities.
