Professor Alistair Fitt

Professor Alistair Fitt is Pro Vice-Chancellor at Oxford Brookes, having a remit that covers all research and knowledge transfer at the University.
Alistair joined us in March 2011 from the University of Southampton where he worked for 22 years, latterly as the Head of the School of Mathematics and then Pro Vice-Chancellor, International.

He studied at Lincoln College, Oxford, and specialises in industrial applied mathematics research. He has published three books and more than 80 research papers and has spent many years attending study groups with industry all over the world, where real unsolved industrial problems are studied by groups of mathematicians.

Alistair’s current research centres on three main areas, namely the flow of glass, food and other complex fluids, flow and deformation in human eyes, and betting and gambling. Though these three areas may at first seem unconnected, they have more in common from a mathematical point of view than one might imagine.

Alistair’s external involvements include close connections with EPSRC and other funding agencies. He is a long-standing member of the Council of the IMA (Institute of Mathematics and its Applications) and the Executive Secretary of ICIAM, the worldwide organisation for Applied Mathematics
