Freedom of information

Freedom of Information Act 2000

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 lets you request any information held by the university. We are required to provide that information within 20 working days of receipt of a request.

Any request for information should:

  • be in writing
  • include your name and return address
  • describe the information that you require.

Publication scheme

Adopting a publication scheme is a requirement of the Freedom of Information Act 2000. This Act promotes greater openness and accountability across the public sector by requiring all ‘public authorities’ to make information available proactively, through a publication scheme.

Our publication scheme describes the information we publish, or intend to publish. In this context, ‘publish’ means to make information available, routinely. The information is divided into 'classes' depending on its type. The scheme is not a list of the actual publications, because this will change as new material is published or existing material revised. It is, however, our commitment to make the information described available.

Limits of disclosure

There are some grounds on which the university may refuse to provide information. These include:

  • where (under the Data Protection Act) we are required to maintain the confidentiality of personal information
  • when the cost of providing the information - finding, sorting, editing and presenting the information requested - exceeds £450
  • where the information being requested is commercially confidential.
