AHRC Awards for 2012/2013, across the three partner institutions, covering both fees and stipend at the standard AHRC rate, are available in the subject areas listed below.
The competition is now open and early application is strongly advised. Applications should be made direct to the candidate’s preferred institution by following the links provided.
It should be noted that in order to be eligible for the AHRC competition, applicants must have first applied for a place at the University of their choice and hold an offer of admission to one of the programmes in the following subject areas.

A three-year fully funded studentship (full-time) in one of the following subject areas:
Oxford Brookes University:
Music at Oxford Brookes provides a vibrant environment for research in historical musicology, popular music studies, composition and sonic art. The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008) identified world leading research in opera studies; popular music; and the interdisciplinary territory of sonic art.

University of Surrey:
Music at Surrey is distinguished by methodological innovation and intellectual pluralism, with an emphasis on hermeneutics. We accord equal weight to activities in musicology, composition, performance and production, while interdisciplinary approaches are fundamental to our endeavour. The Department is highly collegiate and research students have ready access to staff with a wide range of expertise. Our work achieves wide international circulation, both through established scholarly channels and broadcast media.
Within Music we welcome PhD proposals which are broadly situated within the field of:
• Nineteenth/twentieth-century and popular musicology, composition, performance, and creative practice.

Supervision will be provided by excellent researchers from both Universities, working in Departments which were highly ranked in the 2008 RAE.
