This postgraduate certificate in Children's High Dependency Practice enables UK registered healthcare professionals to achieve professional development and gain experience in this specialist area.

You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care. This will be relevant to the management of critically ill children with complex care needs being cared for in a high dependency care environment. 

Successful completion of this course allows you to acieve the Postgraduate Certificate in Children's High Dependency Practice worth 60 CATS credits at Level 7.

This course is not available to students classed as International for fees purposes.

  • You will develop a critical understanding of children's high dependency practice and by applying evidence based practice, deliver the best outcome of care for the patient and their family.
  • There is an emphasis on practice focused learning throughout, with learning and assessments being based around practice and the workplace.
  • Identifying the importance of developing practitioner skills for practice ensures the transferability of the programme to direct service provision.
  • Curriculum content is informed by relevant national and international research and evidence based literature to help you expand the breadth of your studies and develop a depth of critical analysis and evaluation of practice.
  • Importance is placed on the individual's experience within the educational process and your journey of lifelong learning from both a personal and professional perspective.

This postgraduate certificate consists of two compulsory modules; one single (20 credits at Level 7) and one double (40 credits at Level 7). Both modules are delivered face to face.

P44017 Perspectives in Children’s High Dependency Practice (20 credits)
This module will enable you to demonstrate a deep understanding of some of the current issues and themes relating to children’s high dependency care practice.

P44018 Assessment and Management of the Child requiring High Dependency Care (40 credits)
This double level 7 practice module will provide you with the opportunity to examine knowledge and skills in caring for children who require high dependency care, building on your knowledge gained in pre-registration and post–qualifying experience.

Teaching and learning

The teaching, learning and assessment strategy of the programme reflects its student centred, patient-centred and practice-focused approach. Each module has an appropriate division between structured learning activities and private study. You will have opportunities to share your existing and developing skills, knowledge and experience. A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be employed to make the most of the range of experience, skills and knowledge within the group. 

Approach to assessment

You will be assessed in each of the modules. There is a mixture of assessment strategies chosen for their appropriateness for individual module and programme learning outcomes and content, the academic standard expected and the different styles of learning within the group. Assessments are used to give you an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge as well as the critical and reflective analysis required for professional practice.

Assessments will also provide you with an opportunity to experience a range of postgraduate attributes that will prove valuable in your future career.

You are expected to attend the University one day per week.

Entry requirements

  • You should have a UK or overseas degree from a recognised institution or equivalent professional or other qualification.
  • You must hold professional registration with the relevant Nursing and Allied Health Professional Body in the UK.
  • You will normally have a minimum of 12 months post-registration experience in a relevant children’s clinical area.
  • You should be working in a relevant clinical environment in which they can achieve the clinical skills required.
  • You should have access to an appropriate practice supervisor within that area.
  • You will need to have secured the support of your line manager.
  • You will need to have British Council IELTS: overall score of level 7 or above if English is not your first language.


All applicants will be screened for fitness for practice and a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be made.

In addition to the academic entry qualifications, if your first language is not English you must demonstrate that your level of English is appropriate for study at postgraduate level. An IELTS overall score of 7.0 is required for this course.

Applications received electronically through UCAS Postgraduate will be forwarded to the University admissions team. Supporting documentation (for example manager's references and confirmation of funding) should be forwarded using the email addresses provided on the UCAS Postgraduate application form.
