In this seminar Prof Gibson will explain the background to the creation of the new Oxford Handbook on the British Sermon 1689-1901 (to be published by OUP in 2012) and will explore the ways in which the study of sermons can contribute to our understanding of the Church and its role in society in the eighteenth century in particular.
The seminar will use illustrations from a number of sermons and preachers to show that, far from being dull and prosaic, sermons can provide a unique window into the Church in the past.
