Aluminium

Aluminium is an excellent material for recycling as it can be recycled infinitely without loss of quality and recycling saves significant amounts of energy. Recycling aluminium uses only 5% of the energy required to produce 'new' aluminium from bauxite ore (Waste Online)

Reduce / Reuse

For most organisations, aluminium is unlikely to form a large part of their waste.
Aluminium is most commonly found in drink cans. If very large numbers of cans are being used, alternate materials could be used - buying in bulk may save money and waste. However, because of their easily recyclable nature, aluminium cans are often a better choice than materials such as plastic.

Some manufacturing businesses may have aluminium off-cuts from the process. In most cases, these will already be recycled as aluminium is a valuable material.

However, in some cases it may be possible to reduce waste aluminium by reviewing both the steps made in manufacture, and the sizes of sheets / extrusions purchased from suppliers.

Although reviewing manufacturing is a complicated process, it can be a very profitable step. By redesigning or re-evaluating steps in manufacture of aluminium items, businesses can save by reducing the purchasing costs of the 'raw' aluminium they need to use in manufacture.
