Cycling

Why Cycle?

Cycling needs very little introduction - the main advantages and disadvantages are listed below.

Advantages

  • Does not pollute (other than the resources in manufacture, and battery-assisted cycles)
  • Cheap to run
  • Requires little space for parking
  • Beneficial for health, especially heart and circulation
  • In good conditions it is an enjoyable activity
Disadvantages
  • Can be dangerous and unpleasant in busy traffic conditions
  • May require too much physical effort
  • May require a shower and/or change of clothes on arrival at the work place
  • No protection from the elements

There are a huge number of organisations associated with cycling, both national and local to Oxfordshire. Some of these campaign on behalf of cyclists, some offer advice on what to buy or where to go, some discuss battery power for cycles, and one even rescues cyclists that have broken down! The following is just a sample, but includes the major campaigning organisations, and sources of practical information.

Local Information and shops

Cyclox - The Cycling Campaign for Oxford. Cyclox campaigns on specific cycling issues, especially safety problems. Holds regular meetings where people can make suggestions and identify problem areas.

The Oxford Cycle Workshop is a community project that collects, repairs and resells abandoned bikes in Oxford, and gives all sections of the Oxford community the chance to learn how to fix bikes, either as a job or a hobby. At the workshop you can buy, donate or repair your bike. Contact via the web-site or 39 Magdalen Rd, Oxford, OX4 1RB, Tel: 01865 204799, e-mail: info@oxfordcycleworkshop.co.uk

Cycle shops in Oxfordshire This is simply a list of cycle shops in Oxfordshire, with their addresses and telephone numbers. It is provided on the Oxfordshire County Council web site.

Local Cycle Clubs This page has a list of Oxfordshire (and national) cycling clubs and magazines.

National Organisations

Sustrans - Sustrans stands for sustainable transport. It is a charity working on practical projects to encourage people to walk and cycle more, so as to reduce motor traffic and its adverse effects. In particular, Sustrans is co-ordinating the development of cycle routes around the UK, and of safe routes to schools.

The Environmental Transport Association - ETA is a "transport users' organisation" - it has two main areas of activity:

  • It provides a breakdown service equivalent to the AA, RAC or Green Flag for motorists (and cyclists)
  • It campaigns for environmentally sound transport
Its campaigning is in particular to raise awareness of the impact of excessive car use, and it organises and promotes events such as the "Car-ree Day". ETA also actively lobbies parliament and local authorities on a wide range of transport issues.

The Cyclists Touring Club (CTC) - The CTC is a large established cycling organisation. It is a membership organisation, but much of its information is presented in this web site. CTC provides extensive information on all relevant topics, including:

  • buying bikes and other equipment
  • special routes for cycles
  • taking cycles on public transport
  • cycle insurance

It also campaigns for better provision for cyclists on roads and public transport.

There are many regional groups, including an Oxford City, a West Oxon and a Wantage Section. These local groups are mainly involved with events and races.

Cycleweb - Cycleweb is a web-site with a wide range of information including: events, shops, hire, publications, news, clubs etc.

Electric bikes - Although battery-powered cycles do use electricity, they are without doubt much less environmentally damaging than cars. If cycling appeals to you, but is sometimes just too much like hard work, have a look at this site for battery powered cycles.

A to B magazine - This is a web site (and hard copy magazine) which reviews car-alternatives. Folding bicycles feature strongly, but it also covers electric bikes, bike trailers and public transport.

Folding Society - This site has information on different types of folding bicycles, including where to buy them and the ease and speed of folding different models.
