Waste Disposal

Even with a programme of minimisation, recovery and recycling it is likely that there will be some waste which needs disposing. All companies are responsible for complying with Duty of Care regulation on waste disposal, so it is important to be familiar with this. Disposal is the least efficient use of resources, since the company has paid for these materials, and is then paying to get rid of them! Therefore, alternatives should be considered wherever possible. Follow the links above to find out what other options are available, and find local services that can help. It may be helpful to check our definitions of waste types.

Waste Disposal Legislation

See our web pages on the Duty of Care obligations, which relate to waste disposal from businesses, or follow the NetRegs links below for waste disposal legislation advice. We also provide relevant information on the Landfill Directive. The NetRegs website has comprehensive information on environmental legislation, and has a search facility so that you can look up legislation relevant to your particular needs. Some generic documents relevant to many businesses are noted below.

NetRegs Management Guidelines: Duty of care
Environmental Protection Act 1990 Part II/ Environmental Protection Duty of Care Regulations 1991
Since every business produces waste, this legislation applies to all businesses irrespective of the toxicity or amount of waste concerned.
NetRegs Management Guidelines: Special Waste

NetRegs Guidelines: Trade effluents

NetRegs Guidelines: Packaging waste
Explains whether you need to follow packaging regulations, and what you need to do to comply.
