Green Waste

The advice on this page applies to 'green' organic waste. What is green waste? Green waste is generally considered to be waste consisting of plant matter, however the definition of what counts as green waste sometime varies between organisations. Not all green waste recyclers will take all types of green waste so check with them beforehand for exactly what they will accept. This excludes food waste. For information on food waste disposal, visit the food page

Most organisations will only have small amounts of green waste, so specific solutions are unlikely to be suitable. However, for organisations with large gardens, or for organisations that work directly with organic materials (growers, florists etc) there may be suitable solutions.

Reduce / Reuse

Reduce and reuse options are unlikely to be suitable for most green waste.

It is possible that some businesses such as florists, may be able to discuss some options for 'take-back' of unsold items or damaged goods for centralised composting.

Recycle

Composting

If a business has sufficient space there are a range of different composting options that can be taken - from industrial onsite composters, to garden-type bins. For full details of composting options see EiE's composting pages.

Green Waste Collection Services

For many businesses, space constraints mean that installing composting units is impractical.

For very large producers of green waste (pulic gardens etc) a number of skip companies will provide skip hire specifically for green waste at a lower cost than a standard 'mixed waste' skip. Organisations will need to ensure that only green waste is disposed of in these skips to obtain the lower prices. After collection by the skip hire company, the green waste is generally chipped and composted for future use.

Many local authorities now provide green waste collection service to domestic customers at a charge. Depending on the location and the quantities of green waste produced, it may be possible to negotiate a similar service from your local authority.
