Reducing water use at a traditional Oxfordshire brewery

Problem

An Oxfordshire brewery with large premises worked with EiE to identify opportunities for water savings in the brewing process.

EiE identified three areas where water savings could be made:

  • cleaning
  • filling
  • metering

Solution

Large quantities of water were used in cleaning casks. The brewery reviewed nozzles, pressure levels, aim, and timing to improve the water efficiency of cleaning.

Inaccurate manual and semi-automated fill procedures at the brewery wasted large volumes of water. EiE advised on reviewing the filling procedures and identified automated processes to remove this wastage.

Sub-meters were also specified to help identify leaks within the production line. This represented a significant investment for the brewery. However, the improvements in efficiency resulted in a quick payback on investment.
