Classroom-based training
The Graphics Workshop offers several 3-hour courses for University staff and postgraduate students. These courses take place in the Graphics Workshop.
We currently run the following courses:
Photoshop Introductory
You will: set up a new document, make selections using the Marquee and Magic Wand tools, copy selections between images, perform transformations, learn how to use layers, add layer effects, change layer opacity and blending mode, add text to an image, format text, use filters to create special effects, work with the painting tools, undo changes using the History palette, specify colours, fill areas of an image with colour, retouch an image with the colour correction and Clone Stamp tools, learn how to use actions to automate repetitive editing tasks.
Photoshop Intermediate
You will: use advanced selection techniques, save and load selections, work with masks and channels, learn how to use layer masks, create clipping groups, use adjustment layers, understand smart objects, use a range of colour retouching tools, learn how to use the vanishing point tool, record and play an action on a folder of images, work in 3d space with 3d layers.
Microsoft Publisher Introductory
You will: navigate the Publisher interface; set up a document; use pre-designed templates; work with master pages; use margin and layout guides; insert automatic page numbers; specify a colour scheme; add a watermark image; set up and apply styles; create and manipulate text boxes; change the stacking order of objects; format text; link text boxes; transform objects; precisely position and align objects; import and manipulate graphics; wrap text around objects; draw basic shapes and apply colour to them; add drop shadows and 3d effects to objects; set up a document for printing. You will practise these skills whilst working on a simple newsletter.

Return your application form to The Training Officer, Computer Services. Postgraduates should pay at the Computer Services Centre.
Your course request will be logged. When a suitable class is arranged you will be contacted by internal mail. (Please be aware that if the waiting list for a particular course is lengthy you may have to wait some time before a course is offered to you.)
