Streaming media services
The Graphics Workshop is hosting a media streaming service where video and audio material are prepared by user and uploaded to the server. The material is then streamed from the server (QuickTime Streaming Server). To view the material, users need the latest version of QuickTime player installed. This is a free download from Apple. To view samples of material we are currently streaming, click here.
The viewing of material is currently unrestricted, so any user who knows the URL of the stream will be able to see it.
The publishing of media streams involves preparing the material and then sending it to the Graphics Workshop for encoding and publishing on the streaming server.
Media preparation
Users are responsible for capturing and editing their video/audio material before submitting it to Graphics Workshop for streaming. Virtually any video/audio editing application can be used do to this, including the following:
Basic packages
Windows Movie Maker (included with Windows XP)
iMovie (included with Mac OS X)
Premiere Elements (cheap, cut-down version of Adobe Premiere
Advanced packages
Adobe Premiere Pro (Windows)
Apple Final Cut Pro
Apple Final Cut Express
The Graphics Workshop can provide basic training for users of the above packages. It is important that video is output from the editing application at the highest quality possible – please contact us for application-specific export settings.
Media submissions
Preferably, the media should be submitted on a portable hard disk or on tape. Frequent users of the service can be given access to a folder on the streaming server for file uploading.
Media processing and publishing on the streaming server
The final processing - media conversion to a streamable format (encoding) and publishing on the server - will be done by us. The user will then be sent an email containing the urls of the streamed files so that they can be linked to from a web page or from within Brookes Virtual.
Advanced users of the streaming service can handle all file preparation themselves, including encoding and file uploading to the server. Such users will be given more direct access to the server.
For more information on how to prepare media for streaming, please contact the Graphics Workshop (by telephone: 484474 or email: graphics@brookes.ac.uk).
