Streaming Media

The Graphics Workshop is running a media streaming service that allows the viewing of media files (video clips and audio files) across the network using QuickTime Player. The service is hosted on a MacPro workstation running QuickTime Streaming Server. To view the media you need to have the latest version of QuickTime player installed (the free download is available from http://www.apple.com/uk/quicktime/win.html). The viewing of media streams is currently unrestricted, so any user who knows the url of the stream can see it. In the next version of QuickTime Streaming Server, access to the streamed media can be protected if required, so that only authorised groups of users will have access.

Users are responsible for editing the video/audio files before submitting them to the Graphics Workshop for streaming. Virtually any video editing application can be used to do this, including the following:

Basic packages

Windows MovieMaker (built into Windows XP)
Premiere Elements (cheap, cut-down version of Premiere Pro)
iMovie (ships free with Mac OS-X)

Advanced packages

Premiere Pro
Final Cut Express (Mac)
Final Cut Pro (Mac)

The Graphics Workshop can provide basic training for users of the above packages.

It is important that video is output from the editing application at the highest quality possible – please contact us for application-specific export settings.

Once the media file has been received, we will convert it to a streamable format and upload it to the server. The user will then be sent an email containing the urls of the streaming media files so that they can be linked to from web pages.
Advanced and frequent users of the streaming service may be able to handle all file preparation themselves, including final transcoding and uploading of files to the server. Such users will be given more direct access to the server.

For more information on how to prepare media for streaming, please contact the Graphics Workshop (by telephone: 484474 or email: graphics@brookes.ac.uk).
