An Oxford Brookes PhD student will soon have her first book published as part of the Novella Project, run by Holland House. Carly Schabowski’s book, It is Something to Have Been, was selected along with five others as part of the project. Her story, starting in the Second World War, revolves around a man living vicariously through the people he meets and ultimately deals with themes of love, loss and the creative process.
“The novella is almost a composite in some ways, yet there is a story that links each throughout; an overarching narrative that subtly picks up on details within each of the stories to eventually tie them all together at the end.”
Carly found her passion for writing whilst working as a journalist in Australia. On returning to the UK she completed an MA in Creative Writing at Oxford Brookes, and is now finishing the second year of her PhD.
The Novella Project is a fresh initiative from Holland House, and is pioneered by their publisher Robert Peett with support also coming from the Arts Council England. The project was designed to help new and upcoming authors break into the industry.
Carly’s book launches on 3 October 2016, with an official London launch on 6 October at the Enitharmon Gallery and in Oxford on 13 October at Blackwell’s Bookstore on the Oxford Brookes Headington Campus.
It is Something to Have Been can be purchased in bookstores and pre-ordered on Amazon.
