language supportAcademic English language development and support does not end when you join an undergraduate or postgraduate course at Oxford Brookes University.

We recognise the need to support you throughout your studies and offer free advice and training so you can make the best of your time at Oxford Brookes.

Undergraduate academic English support

Our support for undergraduate students includes credit bearing modules (modules which count towards your degree) and non credit bearing classes, tutorials, and study resources.

Academic English modules

A range of credit bearing modules in academic English language are available if your first language is not English to help you perform more effectively in your undergraduate studies. These can be taken as a free ninth module or as a tenth module for an additional cost.

  • Academic listening and speaking
  • Critical reading skills
  • Advanced English language skills
  • Key academic skills

Academic English support

The undergraduate Academic English support service is non credit bearing and you can sign up for free classes, tutorials and short courses or use their independent study resources. 

You can choose from a range of course and timetable options depending on your requirements.

Postgraduate academic English support

For postgraduate and research students whose first language is not English, it is important to develop the specific language knowledge and skills needed for academic study as quickly and effectively as possible.

We offer a free service designed to achieve this with non credit bearing short courses, tutorials, independent study resources and personal guidance.

Semester 1

  • an 18 hour academic writing skills course
  • one-one academic writing tutorials
  • a 6 hour research reading skills course
  • an 18 hour speaking skills course
  • a 4 hour lecture listening course
  • online learning modules critical review writing, academic vocabulary, grammar and more

Semester 2

  • an 18 hour dissertation and thesis English writing skills course with one-one tutorials
  • a 4 hour research reading course
  • an 18 hour speaking skills course
  • a 6 hour presentation language skills course
  • drop in language support tutorials
  • online learning modules on literature review language, dissertation expressions and more
