What information does the Library have on accountancy? How do I find the information I need?

This is the guide to finding and using information on accountancy. It does not tell you everything but it should prove useful as a starting point for your enquiries.

General information about the Library and its services is contained in a number of leaflets, which are available at the Enquiry Desk and also on the Library's home page.

Information on specific aspects of accountancy may be shelved in different parts of the Library, for example with economics and business. The key to finding appropriate information, therefore, is the Library Catalogue.

Finding books on accountancy

If you are looking for a particular book and you know the AUTHOR'S NAME or the TITLE you can search by these on the Catalogue to find the particular record you want. In addition to letting you know how many copies are available, Catalogue records will also give you a shelfmark for each book i.e. where the item is kept on the Library shelves.

If you do not have full details of the book you are looking for try using the KEYWORD search instead, which will find records containing a specific word(s) and which can also be combined with AUTHOR.

Listed below are some general shelfmarks for accountancy:

Other places to look

Other useful sources of information, especially for looking up unfamiliar terms or finding explanations of a subject are dictionaries and encyclopaedias. Dictionaries give definitions and encyclopaedias give a brief run-down of a subject and can be a useful starting-point for any research. The titles listed below are just some of those shelved in Wheatley Library's QUICK REFERENCE area which is opposite the Enquiry Desk.

Finding journal articles

Journal articles are more up to date than books and are therefore extremely useful to the researcher. Many titles are available electronically and can be accessed via the Internet. An A to Z list of titles and subject listings of all the full text electronic and print journals available to Brookes' staff and students can be accessed via the Business subject web page URL: www.brookes.ac.uk/library/business.html

Printed versions of journals are arranged in the Library according to subject shelfmarks and can be located by doing a title search on the journals section of the Library Catalogue.

Databases, such as Business Source Complete and Emerald, carry full text articles or abstracts from academic journals and enable you to carry out searches on accountancy subjects by author, title, keyword and subject.  You can find further information on these sources by going onto the Business subject web page (as above), or clicking on Electronic Library from the Library home page and selecting Databases.

More detailed guides to using the databases are available on our web pages and we run regular workshops to help you get the best from these resources. Look out for information in the Library or ask your subject librarian.

Internet sources

There are vast amounts of information available on the Internet. Browsing or 'surfing' the Internet can be interesting but also time consuming and it is not always easy to find information at the appropriate level for your research.

The following are some examples of accountancy sites available on the Internet:

Accountancy online monthly magazine from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales: www.accountancymag.co.uk

Accountancy Age online magazine covering management consultancy, accountancy and finance: www.accountancyage.com

ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) list of members: www.accaglobal.com

CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) free to download briefings and reports: www.cimaglobal.com/resources

CIPFA (Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy) provides training in accountancy and finance for the public service sector: www.cipfa.org.uk

Other useful sites are available through the Business subject web pages at www.brookes.ac.uk/library/business.html
