Gateways to economics and business sources on the internet

It would too time consuming to give a comprehensive guide to every relevant internet source. Fortunately, there are a number of excellent gateway services, which provide subject guides to business and economics, and hypertext links to many thousands of URLs.

RBA Information services
This guide to business sources from RBA Information services, run by Karen Blakeman, a leading consultant on business information on the Internet, again, not only provides many useful links, but gives a critical analysis of all
the different categories of material which helps place into perspective what there is freely available on the internet which really is useful. An associated book is available in the Library:

BLAKEMAN, Karen (1997) Business information on the Internet, Caversham, RBA Information services
(Wheatley Library Oversize 658.0183 BLA)

Another useful book which can be found in the Quick Reference section of the Wheatley Library is:

The guide to EU information sources on the internet (2nd Edition) 2002 (Wheatley Library QR 337.14202854678 GUI)

BestofBiz
This site is the result of collaboration between two publishing companies, A&C Black and Swetswise. However, it is included here because it has useful links to research in both UK and International Business Schools as well as referenced articles on current issues in business and economics. It also includes book reviews, news and research guides.

Biz/ed
Also included in the two of the sections below, Biz/ed is included here because it includes a catalogue of web addresses. Covering business, economics, accounting, leisure, travel and tourism, the site offers support for students and teachers at different levels from undergraduate to MBA.

Brint
This site is both a gateway service to a huge number of useful sites and a database containing a huge collection of full text material. It describes itself as primarily a collection on contemporary management and technology issues. Its Business and Technology map includes hundreds of full text journals and book reviews on, for example, Intranets, Reengineering, Knowledge management, MIS Research etc.. Organised by Yogesh Malhotra, a link is available to www virtual library on knowledge management which includes many of his papers in full text, and much more full text material besides.

British Library
This site has been designed with researchers in mind and covers the services and extensive holdings of the British Library's Business & IP Centre.

BUBL Link
BUBL, the Bulletin Board for Libraries, provides connections to a huge variety of sources. Links for Accounting, Business, Banking, Economics, Marketing, Management, Personnel Management and another 1100 subject terms are available. At least 5 URLs are listed for each subject term. Sites are vetted, and have a strong academic orientation, with usually at least 5, and no more than 15 sites listed per subject term. At least 50% of sites are UK, or non USA ones. URLs are checked every month for availability.

Human resource management on the Internet
Originating from Nottingham Business School this is a very comprehensive collection of URLs in this area, including addresses of many companies.

YAHOO
Again, this provides access to a huge variety of sources. The URL above provides direct access to the Business and Economy section of Yahoo. This section has 31 sub-sections, with headings such as "Small business information", "Economics", "Trade", and "Marketing", which provide access to URLs for over 11,000 sites. Originating in the USA, there is a strong American flavour to Yahoo.

Intute
Intute: Social Sciences has been created by bringing together two of the Hubs of the Resource Discovery Network: Altis and SOSIG. The new service provides information and tools to help you access the best of the Web in social sciences and Business.

Economics resources on the Internet
Produced by Bill Goffe of the Department of Economics and International Business, University of Southern Mississippi, this is a massive, comprehensive guide to economics resources. The URL above is the hypertext version of a document entitled "Resources for Economists on the Internet". This document lists and describes all the sources in almost 100 pages if printed.

FINWeb
Based at the University of Texas, FINWeb is probably most useful for the access it provides to electronic journals and working papers in the area of Financial Economics.

globalEDGE (formerly International Business Resources on the WWW)
This site is organised by the Michigan State University Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER). It provides URLs for sites providing information on worldwide countries economies and their social, business, political background, and in addition, advice on exporting and trade, and trade legislation.
