Introduction

The Internet, while sometimes a useful source of information, does not remotely contain everything you would like for your studies. For example, companies do not usually publish sensitive in-house information, such as strategies, procedures or policies. Some information is not available in the public domain.

Additionally you must always be aware of who placed the information there, and why. Why is the information not published in a prestigious academic journal? How current is the information? Is there quality control on the content?

The information that we can provide electronically is both marketable and expensive; we pay substantial subscriptions for its use. The Internet does not provide for free any of the printed information in books or journals or any information in the electronic databases. The databases in the following sections do use the Internet for communication, but because the Library pays subscriptions, access is security protected.

You can search the Internet on the University network using all of the usual search engines, but we have listed some of the best sites available in the pages listed below.

Also look at the excellent online tutorial on the internet for business studies available from Intute (formerly the Resource Discovery Network) via:

http://www.intute.ac.uk/socialsciences/

This is an excellent site produced for all UK Higher Education sites by JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee), so we don't propose to cover the same territory here. It will be well worth spending some time doing this. It should take roughly one hour, and you should find some interesting things.
