Safari Books Online

Safari Books Online is a collection of 215 books available electronically, either on or off campus. The selection includes computer science, desktop publishing, e-commerce, programming, IT management and business applications, many from O'Reilly and Pearson Technology publishers.

A core selection of books that have been recommended by module leaders will always be available, however some titles are changed to reflect the books you are using or to meet user requests.

How to use Safari

If you are on campus you can connect to Safari here. Individual books are also linked from the Library Catalogue.

Off campus access is controlled by Athens. Off campus users should login to Athens on the Library Homepage and then follow the link to Safari from the Electronic Library. Click the Athens Users Sign In link at the bottom of the Safari login screen to enter the database.

Off campus users should log out of Safari when they have finished using the collection. This releases the books for another user.

  • Once on the Safari homepage you can search for a topic using the Search box. The drop down menu will allow you to search the 'Entire Collection' or 'Book titles'.
  • 'Entire Collection' searches across all the text of all our subscribed books. Type one or more terms into the Search box, and it will search for them near to each other. Surround phrases with quotation marks and only items containing the exact phrase returned.
  • Click into the Section Title to see sections containing your search terms or click onto the book cover to have access to the whole book.
  • You can also 'Browse by category' to see all the books we have in each of the categories listed. The Product category provides links to all the books on a specific program or device e.g. Maya or iPhone
  • The 'Advanced search' option allows you to search for a particular known book, or books by a particular publisher, or search for exact word matches.
  • Clicking on 'View all titles' shows a list of the titles available to Oxford Brookes users..

Warning

Safari is as easy to use as opening a 'real' book, but you do not have to come in to the Library and take the book out to do it. You would not bother to photocopy a whole real book, so please do not try to download a whole e-book! If you abuse this database we will lose all our access rights. As with the hard copy, copyright laws exist and similar restrictions apply. You are usually allowed to copy one chapter (section) of either type of book, in your role as a student at Brookes (but not for commercial use). You must not use robots (no spidering, crawling or scraping) or any other automated means of access.
