If you wish to include small extracts from copyright items in digital material provided to students, this may come under the guidelines for quotations and not under the CLA Scanning Licence rules.   The accepted limits on quotations are:

- From a poem of over 160 lines, 40 lines.
- From a shorter poem, one quarter of the poem.
- From one work which is not a poem.
- One extract of up to 400 words or several extracts, each up to 300 words, and totalling no more than 800 words.

The quotations should be included in a text that comments on them. The quotations should not be scanned from their sources but retyped.

The following categories are excluded:

- Printed music (including the words).
- Maps.
- Charts or books of tables.
- Public examination papers.
- Workbooks, work cards and assignment sheets.
- Privately owned documents issued for tuition purposes and limited to clientele who pay fees.
- Newspapers.
- Industrial house journals.

Note: The Licence covers scanning from printed publications only.   The Licence does not allow scanning from printouts from the internet or CD-ROM. It does not allow making digital copies of digital material, for example, material downloaded from the web or material published on CD-ROM.

Other alternatives may include:

Using existing electronic resources

The Library subscribes to a wide range of electronic resources, particularly electronic journals. Although you may not put electronic journal articles into Brookes Virtual courses, they are easily available to students via the Electronic Library web pages.

Providing photocopies for students

The CLA Photocopying Licence is less restrictive than the Scanning Licence and requires no record keeping. See the guidelines Providing photocopies for students available via the library web pages.

Writing to publishers

The owner of the rights in a copyright work is usually the publisher (the rights owner is unlikely to be the author). The rights owner is able to give permission for any sort of copying and is able to override any restriction imposed by the Copyright Act or the CLA Scanning Licence.
