E-books
- MyiLibrary - this brings together e-books on various subject areas, currently primarily covering business and economics titles, but with new titles added all the time from any discipline.
- Dawsonera - a collection of e-books from different subject areas with new titles being added all the time.
- Safari Books Online (Full text) - this is a collection
of e-books on various aspects of Information Technology. The selection
includes computer science, desktop publishing, e-commerce, programming,
IT management and business applications.
You can connect to Safari here.
If you are off campus you will need to log into Athens. Click on the Athens users sign in at the foot of the login screen to enter the database.
You can read our guide to Safari. The individual book titles are listed on our Library catalogue. If you are on campus you can link directly to the book title from the Catalogue entry. If you are off campus you will need to log in to Athens (see above) and then search for the book that you require.
If you are using Safari off campus it is important that you log out of the database at the end of your session to release the collection for other users.
- Early English Books Online (EEBO) - digital facsimile page images of virtually every work printed in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and British North America and works in English printed elsewhere from 1473-1700. The books are not listed on the Library Catalogue.
- Eighteenth Century Collections Online - digital images of 150,000 books published during the 18th Century. The books are not listed on the Library Catalogue.
- Read Print - thousands of free books for students. The books are not listed on the Library
Catalogue.
- Project Gutenberg : this is a collection of 18,000 free electronic books, most of which are older literary works. For full details of the collection, visit the Project Gutenberg web site. The books are not listed on the Library Catalogue.
- Business Source Complete which covers many management, business and economics journals also includes many full text books, conference papers and reports. These are not listed on the Library Catalogue but you can check this list for details. If you are off campus, you will need to log in to Athens to see the full text
- NCBI Bookshelf : this is a freely available collection of biomedical books hosted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). You can link to the Bookshelf here.The books are not listed on the Library Catalogue.
- E-book.com.au : an Australian e-book portal. Connect to E-book.com.au,. The books are not listed on the Library Catalogue.
Reference e-books
- Oxford Reference Online : a collection of about 200 dictionary, language reference, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press. From the Oxford Reference Online home page you can see a complete list of books in the collection by choosing the 'Subjects and books' option. Alternatively, if you are looking for a particular title, you can check our Library Catalogue for details. If you are off campus, you will need to log in to Athens to see the full text.
- Dictionaries and encyclopaedias are listed on our electronic reference desk.
- We also have the African studies companion - a comprehensive guide to print and electronic sources of information relating to African studies.
- Business Source Complete also includes some full text reference books. Check this list of titles (Excel file) for coverage details and hypertext links to the books. If you are off campus, you will need to log in to Athens to see the full text.
Digitisation projects
- Google is working with the New York Public Library plus the libraries of Harvard, Stanford, the University of Michigan, and the University of Oxford to digitally scan books 15 million print books from their collections so that users can search them in Google. - The Internet Archive has announced plans to digitize more than one million books from a dozen libraries in 5 countries. It will provide open access to the digitised texts.
