EndNote

EndNote is a service which allows you to collect, store and manage your own collection of references. You can insert these references automatically into Word documents, such as dissertations, essays and reports, and create bibliographies in the style of your choice. You can also transfer references from many databases straight into EndNote.

There are two versions of EndNote:
  • EndNote desktop – a software version installed on all university networked PCs and also available to buy for home use.
  • EndNote Web - allows you to create a web-based Library of references which you can access from wherever you are. It is available to all Oxford Brookes staff, researchers and students free of charge, but you must register first.

On these pages, you'll find information and help on both versions.

EndNote desktop or Web - which version should I use?

There are differences in functionality between EndNote and EndNote Web. To check if EndNote Web will meet your needs, go to the Thomson Reuters web site which gives an in-depth comparison of the versions.

Can I use both desktop and Web versions? Yes, references can be transferred from your EndNote desktop library to EndNote Web and vice versa, so you can use both products if you wish. See our guide for how to transfer references between the two versions.

EndNote X3

EndNote X3 is the newest version available for use on Brookes pooled room PCs.

Information about all versions of EndNote is available from the EndNote Support web site where you can also you can download updated patches, connection files, filters and styles.

A key feature of the newer versions - EndNote X1, EndNote X2 and EndNote X3 - is that they allow you to group your references together as you wish. This feature is also available in EndNote Web

Compatibility of EndNote versions

  • EndNote X3 can easily open and use libraries created with EndNote versions 8, 9, X, X1, and X2. No conversion is necessary.
  • EndNote X, X1, X2, and X3 are fully compatible so you can share your libraries between these versions and collaborate with other researchers if they use these versions.
  • EndNote X3 can automatically convert libraries created with earlier versions of EndNote (versions 5, 6, or 7) - see the Help pages on EndNote X3 for instructions.

EndNote X

EndNote X was released in summer 2006 and is still available on the University network.

EndNote X.0.2 is an update patch which you can download from the EndNote Support web site. The patch includes a fixed version of the EndNote import file which was not working correctly in the early release of EndNote X. If you are using the direct export feature on any of the databases, first make sure you have installed the patch.

If you are using earlier versions of EndNote and do not want to upgrade, you can download updated patches, connection files, filters and styles from the EndNote Support web site.
