What is EndNote Web?

EndNote is a software package you can use for managing your references, e.g. while writing an essay, assignment, dissertation, thesis or papers for publication. EndNote Web is a web version of this software which allows you to create a web-based Library of references which you can access from wherever you are.
There are 3 key features of EndNote and EndNote Web that can be useful for students, staff and researchers:

  1. They allow you to create your own database of references, known as a “Library”. This will be fully searchable and you can annotate your references e.g. to add your own notes or keywords.
  2. They can be used in conjunction with many databases and library catalogues to transfer references into your EndNote Library.
  3. They can be used in conjunction with Word to insert references into text and create a bibliography formatted in the style of your choice e.g. Brookes Harvard or Brookes British Standard.

Institutions which have site licences for EndNote and/or subscriptions to the ISI Web of Knowledge Service for UK Education now have FREE access to EndNote, so it is available to all Oxford Brookes staff, researchers and students.

Note that you need to register first in order to use EndNote Web. This is a simple procedure - you just need your email address and a password of your choice.

EndNote Web or desktop - which should I use?

There are differences in functionality between EndNote and EndNote Web. To check if EndNote Web will meet your needs, go to the Thomson Reuters web site which gives an in-depth comparison of the versions.

References can be transferred from your EndNote library to EndNote Web and vice versa, so you can use both products if you wish.

If you decide to use EndNote Web, you should be aware of the following :

  • You will be able to use EndNote Web whilst you are a member of Oxford Brookes University. If you are no longer at Brookes, or at another eligible institution, you will no longer be able to use EndNote Web and access your data.
  • Your EndNote Library will be stored on a server in the United States. If for any reason the server is unavailable then your references will also be unavailable to you. In addition, be aware that US government agencies are able to access your data at any time and without notice.
  • As with EndNote desktop, some connection files and import filters may not work properly.
  • You may sometimes find the service slow or experience problems when trying to search for references in your EndNote Web library to insert in your Word document.
  • If you also use EndNote desktop, you can transfer references between the two versions of EndNote but these will be 2 separate libraries and you cannot automatically synchronise them.
