Which are the best e-journals for me to use for Modern Languages?

These are selective lists of e-journals relevant to Modern Languages - many more full-text e-journals are available to Brookes staff and students.

How do I find other relevant e-journals?

You can search the complete A-to-Z electronic journals service to find other relevant journal titles.
The Library Catalogue lists all our e-journals and also our printed journals. To search the Catalogue for a journal, enter the journal title into the keyword or title search box and select "Electronic & Printed Journals Catalogue."
Note that the A-Z list of e-journals and the Library Catalogue list journal titles, not articles.

E-journals usually allow you to browse through issues and may also offer a keyword search option so you can track down articles on your topic. The best way to search for a wide range of articles or other publications on your topic is to use a database

How do I access these e-journals?

If you are on campus, just look up the journal title in our A-to-Z electronic journals service.

Most of our e-journals are also available off campus, but note that in order to access most electronic resources from home, you need to log into Athens. Check our guide to Logging into Athens for tips.

French electronic newspapers and journals

Factiva database covers many French newspapers, both national and regional, plus a range of current affairs, business and trade magazines, including: L´Entreprise, L'Expansion, L´Express, L'Humanité, L'Indépendant, Libération, Le Point, Le Temps, La Tribune and many others.
To search Factiva for articles from French publications:

  • Click on 'Source'.
  • If you want to search through a specific newspaper, e.g. 'Libération', type the newspaper title in the 'Find a Source' box.
    OR, if you want to search through all French publications on the database, use the ‘Select Source Category’ drop-down menu to select Publications – By Region. From the list of regions, click on the + box next to ‘European countries’, then the + box next to Western European Countries, then click on France to add it to your search.
  • The default Language setting is to look for articles in English. To change this, first click on English to remove it from your search. Next, click on 'Language' and select French from the list to add it to your search.
  • Type your French keywords in the 'Free text' box.

Japanese electronic newspapers and journals

Factiva database covers many Japanese newspapers and current affairs magazines, including: The Daily Yomiuri, The Japan Times, Kabushiki Shimbun, Mainichi Shimbun, The Nikkei Weekly, Sankei Shimbun and more.
To search Factiva for articles from Japanese publications:

  • Click on 'Source'.
  • If you want to search through a specific source, e.g. 'Kabushiki Shimbun', type the newspaper title in the 'Find a Source' box.
    OR, if you want to search through all Japanese publications on the database, use the ‘Select Source Category’ drop-down menu to select Publications – By Region. From the list of regions, click on the + box next to ‘Asia’, then the + box next to ‘Eastern Asian Countries’, then click on Japan to add it to your search
  • The default Language setting is to look for articles in English. If you only want Japanese-language sources, click on English to remove it from your search, then click on 'Language' and select Japanese from the list to add it to your search.
  • Type your Japanese keywords in the 'Free text' box.

To search Factiva for articles from Spanish publications:

  • Click on 'Source'.
  • If you want to search through a specific publication, e.g 'El Pais', type the publication title in the 'Find a Source' box.
    OR, if you want to search through all Spanish publications on the databasese, use the ‘Select Source Category’ drop-down menu to select Publications – By Region. From the list of regions, click on the + box next to ‘European countries’, then the + box next to Western European Countries, then click on Spain to add it to your search.
