Interlibrary Loans service

When doing research you will certainly come across references to items which are not held in the Library. These items can often be obtained for you via the Interlibrary Loans service. This service, available to all staff and students, enables Oxford Brookes University Library to borrow items from other UK libraries and even abroad.

Interlibrary Loan Service – delays from British Library

The delivery of some interlibrary loan requests may be delayed due to to the discovery of asbestos in some British Library buildings. Please plan ahead and place your requests as early as you can to allow for any possible delay.

How do I request an interlibrary loan?

How long will it take?

  • A photocopy request is supplied to us via Secure Electronic Delivery and should be available for collection within 3 working days (subject to availability).
  • We can never guarantee a delivery time for loans because they may be out to other users, but we often receive them within 10 working days (subject to availability).
  • Urgent Action is a guaranteed delivery of 48 hours (subject to availability).
  • If your request is not available in the UK it may be possible to obtain material from abroad, but this can be expensive and may take some time.

How will I be notified when it arrives?

  • On the request forms you are invited to give us your contact details. We will use these to contact you if we have any difficulties with your request and to let you know when material is ready for you to collect.

Where do I collect it from?

  • Photocopies: students may indicate on the request form whether they would like to have photocopies posted to their home address or whether they would like to pick the photocopies up from the Library Counter. Staff and researchers will have photocopies posted internally to their pigeonholes. You can keep the photocopy we have obtained for you.
  • Loans: all loans must be picked up at the Library Counter where the request was submitted. A charge of £5 is levied to users if material is not collected before the return date.

How long can I keep it?

  • Loans are usually for three weeks, with the possibility of renewal. Renewals should be made via the Interlibrary Loan office at least two working days before the end of the loan period; a charge is made for this service ( £3.40 for staff and researchers / £2.50 for students).
  • Return loans promptly since we rely on other libraries' goodwill to lend us material. Fines will be charged on overdue items at the rate of 35p per day, plus a standard renewal charge of £2.50 (students) / £3.40 (staff and research students) for any item overdue by more than ten days.
  • Most items are for loan but some, like theses, are for reference use only in the Library

Further help

If you have any difficulty with your requests, the Interlibrary Loans staff will be pleased to help. Call in at the office on the First Floor at the Headington Library, ask at the counters at the Wheatley and Harcourt Hill Libraries or e-mail us directly.

Document delivery services

Some electronic information services offer full text articles and other documents which you can order using your credit/debit card. This can be a speedy and convenient way of obtaining material. However, it is expensive and the Library will usually be able to obtain the same material through our Interlibrary Loans service.
