This is a quick overview of how you can make the best use of Wheatley Library. Business School and Faculty of Technology students will find all their books, journals and Subject Librarians located here.
The first thing you will want to do is to find the books on your reading list. You can do this through the Library catalogue which is available on and off campus.
If you know the author and title enter these details to check if the book is available. You can use the Keyword search if you are not sure of these details.
You will notice each book has a numbered shelfmark, which tells you where it is located in the Library. You will find the books you want in number order on the shelves.
The catalogue will also tell you how many copies we have and which Library stocks it.
Some items on your reading list will be in heavy demand so we have a separate short loan collection with 4 hour and 24 hour loan periods. Short loan books have to be borrowed and returned at the dedicated self service point. You can also collect your reserved books from the Short Loan area.
In some cases we have been able to buy an electronic version of your recommended reading, and these are available to use on and off campus via the library catalogue.
Your reading list will also refer you to articles from journals. The catalogue can only look for journal titles not individual articles.
The best way to search for these is to use the Library catalogue from a networked computer to find out if the journal you are looking for is available in print or electronically.
The catalogue will give you the shelfmarks for print journals which have to be used in the Library.
Where the full text of articles are available electronically the catalogue will link to a relevant database where you can download or print the article. Many journals are available for downloading off campus.
Once you have your books, take them to the Self Service points next to the Reception desk for borrowing. You can also return and renew your books here. You will need your student card to do all of this. Books are issued to a due date and reminders are emailed to prompt you to renew them. You can renew by phone, by internet or in person. There is a charge for late returns. Short loan books are charged at a premium, so ensure that they are returned on time.
At the Reception desk you can top up your charge account, collect your colour printing and ask staff for help.
If you cannot find what you are looking for, your Subject Librarians are there to help you. We can provide guidance on the most appropriate database and searching techniques to use. We also provide training opportunities so you can make the best use of the resources available to you. You can get in touch with your Subject Librarian via the Library enquiry desk. You can also contact them by email or phone. Subject pages contain help and useful links relevant to your studies.
Next to the Library enquiry desk you can get help with IT problems and accessing the wireless network.
When you need to work on a group assignment or presentation, we have group study rooms available in the Library. You can book a group study room at the Library Reception. If you want to work quietly on your own the silent study areas are located across the walkway in the journals area.
Printers are located throughout the Library and you can print your work out at any networked computer. Photocopiers and scanners are also available.
