WebCT: Creating a glossary

In the glossary, you can view images and definitions of terms found in your course. You can view the entire glossary or you can view entries by the starting letter. You can also search the glossary by keyword or partial word. The following guide will demonstrate how to add glossary items to an individual content page. It is important to go through your page of content and list all the words you wish to add to the glossary, being sure to have the exact spelling, as it appears on the page.

  1. In the Content Page under Table of Contents, locate and open the page in which you wish to include a glossary item link, from here on referred to as the Example Page

Select the radio button Designer Options.

  2. On the next page in the Main Options section, select the radio button:
Glossary (will not appear in Action Menu until linked manually, below)
    Then click the Go button

If this is the first time you have done this, the following page inform you that "The glossary does not contain any keywords"

  3. In the section Add New Keyword to Glossary,
select the radio button Add a Keyword
    and click Go

You will now add an Example Keyword and its description to the text boxes

In the text box Keyword: enter your Example Keyword

In the text box Definition: enter Example Definition

Click on the Add button below the text boxes

To check entries click the radio button View

    Viewing the glossary

This page shows how a student will view and use the glossary; either by searching it, viewing all the entries at once, or by letter.

Try out the different ways the student can use the glossary.

Click back on the Designer Options radio button when you have finished.

  4. Next you will create a hyperlink from the Example Keyword you have created in your Example Page to its glossary entry.

In the Designer Options window, click the checkbox next to the Example Keyword and click the button Page Links.

The Example Page will open in the right frame window and a radio button is displayed next to the Example keyword.

Select the radio button next to Example Keyword. Then click on the button Update at the bottom of the Example Page.

  5. Next click on Example Page in the 'breadcrumbs' bar and select the View radio button again to access the student view

  6. Click on the hyperlink Example Keyword to check it works.

Notes: if the Example Keyword appears more than once on the same page, you can only link one instance of it to a glossary entry (you can link to it from other course pages though).
