Department of Nursing

  • Return to Practice

Approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)

The aim of this module is to prepare qualified health care professionals, who have previously been on the UKCC/NMC Register, but whose registration has lapsed and therefore do not meet the requirements to maintain that registration with the  Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and to return to the appropriate part of the register.

You will be facilitated to re-enter clinical practice as a safe, competent and confident practitioner who is able to provide a high standard of care and be accountable for that care.

The Module Team recognises and values that practitioners returning to work bring with them a variety of professional and life experiences and that they also have individual learning needs. To assist you through the module, you will be provided with opportunities to assess your current strengths and areas for development in a supportive learning environment. The course should be seen as resumption on a pathway of lifelong professional development and learning.

This course is open to previously qualified:

    • Adult Nurses
    • Children's Nurses
    • Mental Health Nurses
    • Midwives (January cohorts only)
    • Health Visiting (Students would first need to return to the appropriate part of the UK NMC Register)

    Course eligibility

Evidence of previous (lapsed) registration on appropriate parts of the UKCC / Nursing and Midwifery Council Professional Register.

Places may be available on the module to applicants who have been previously registered in the EU and who have been recommended by the NMC to undertake a Return to Practice Course. You will need to provide a copy of the letter of recommendation from the NMC. All applicants in this category are required to provide documentary proof of ability to study in English at IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 7.0, or higher, with a minimum score of 6.5 in each component of the test. Production of this evidence is the responsibility of the applicant and should be submitted at the time the application is made.
