Details of my research

  • Carbon counting and carbon mapping of buildings and cities
  • Urban energy modelling using geographical information systems,
  • Low/zero carbon buildings: design and performance
  • Building performance evaluation and post-occupancy feedback
  • Climate change adaptation of buildings and cities

As Principal Investigator (PI), Prof Gupta has won close to £4 million in research and consultancy grants from ESRC, EPSRC, Technology Strategy Board, British Council, World Bank and industry.

In 2005 Dr Gupta brought together disparate fields of energy modelling and spatial mapping to create the RIBA award-winning (2006) model called DECoRuM®, which is able to measure, model, map and manage domestic CO2 emissions on an urban scale. Currently Prof Gupta is project leader and principal investigator of the £1.14 million ESRC-funded EVALOC project on evaluating the impacts, effectiveness and success of DECC-funded low carbon communities on localised energy behaviours (Grant Reference: RES-627-25-0012).

He is lead academic on 13 Technology Strategy Board funded projects on Retrofit for the future; Design for future climate: adapting buildings; and Building performance evaluation in collaboratoon with a range of industry partners. He is also principal investigator on the EPSRC funded SNACC project on suburban neighbourhood level adaptation for a changing climate (Grant reference: EP/G060959/1).
