I was initially attracted to the study of philosophy by the subject material; I enjoyed reading philosophy texts. However it struck me early on in my degree that the skills you gain when studying philosophy, such as being able to reason effectively and analyse arguments, are skills which are widely applicable. The ability to think well is something invaluable to everyday life.
I chose Oxford Brookes for several reasons: I liked the philosophy department here as it is quite small and close-knit so you get to know people well, and I wanted to live in an inspiring place like Oxford. Something I’ve enjoyed this year has been the Philosophy Society at Brookes, which has guest speakers and also encourages students to give talks.
