Ian is project director of the University's Urban Regeneration Consultancy. He has worked as an architect in private practice, as a director (finally managing director) of a property company working mainly in the Netherlands, and has been associated with the Joint Centre since its foundation. Recent major practice work includes developing urban design strategies for the Angell Town Estate, Brixton (Times/RIBA Community Award for Partnership 1991, Civic Trust Award 1994) part of St. Ann's, Nottingham (1994) and Stoke City Council's lead project for the DoE's Urban Design Campaign (1996) and regeneration work for West Dorset District Council at Bridport and Dorchester.
This work has included running major studies of user perceptions using questionnaires and structured interviews, as well as extensive experience of the problems and opportunities of running face-to-face workshops and negotiations with people from a wide range of professional and social backgrounds. He has also run many in-house training courses on urban quality issues for local authorities, and for RTPI.
