Welcome to the new online version of the journal. We are pleased
to say that the new site means that the journal is now freely
available. We no longer have a print journal and
combined with a move from commercial web hosting to a site
where we receive support and web hosting for no charge has
meant we can move away from subscriptions to an open access
model. A move which is appealing both in principle and in
practice – we hope you agree.
The East Asian Leaner should appeal to practicing teachers,
inside and outside the region, who teach English to East Asian
learners. The journal takes a pragmatic approach and aims
to explore the educational and cultural contexts that students
come from and in which they are presently learning, to look
at relevant contrastive analysis and to share ideas for classroom
practice. It will also appeal to researchers engaged in work
connected to the region in the areas of applied linguistics
and education. We are also looking to draw in work in other
areas of research that can illuminate our understanding of
the learners we teach, our pedagogic interactions and the
contexts in which we do this.
The journal publishes a range of articles from research articles
to shorter contributions for example, on classroom practice,
as well as book reviews and reader's replies. We would welcome
all contributions and a contributors guide is available on
the website.
The journal existed as The Japanese Learner from 1993 to 2003
and was published in Oxford by Katie Gray. There is an archive
of a collection of articles published in 2001 from that Journal.
We widened the countries the journal covers to reflect the
growing international interest in learners from this region
and the changing profile of international students who are
studying in the UK. The Journal is generally published twice
a year in May and November and has an international editorial
board.
I hope you find the journal informative, useful and interesting.
